How to Get to Cinque Terre from Florence: Train, Car, Bus or Private Driver

Riomaggiore village, the first stop when you work out how to get to Cinque Terre from Florence

If you are wondering how to get to Cinque Terre from Florence, you have four realistic options: a regional train with a change in La Spezia, driving yourself, a bus tour, or a private driver. The train is the cheapest and takes about 2.5 to 3 hours; a car or driver is the most flexible, but the villages themselves are closed to private traffic.

Below we compare each option honestly, including the parts nobody mentions until you are standing in a car park above Vernazza.

Is there a direct train from Florence to Cinque Terre?

No. There is no direct train, so you take a regional train from Florence to La Spezia and change there for the local train along the coast, according to this Florence to Cinque Terre travel guide.

The whole journey usually takes between 2.5 and 3 hours, and regional trains do not need a seat reservation. From La Spezia, the Cinque Terre National Park notes that local trains are frequent, especially in summer, and stop at all five villages: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare.

How far is Cinque Terre from Florence by train?

By train, count on roughly 2.5 to 3 hours each way from Florence Santa Maria Novella, including the change in La Spezia, as the same travel guide explains. That makes a day trip possible, but you will spend five to six hours of your day on trains.

The first leg to La Spezia runs along the Pisa–Genoa line, and La Spezia is where long-distance trains meet the coastal service. If a connection is tight, the next local train is rarely a long wait in high season.

What about driving to Cinque Terre from Florence?

Driving to Cinque Terre from Florence is about 200 km (125 miles) and roughly 3 hours via the A11 and A12, with around €14 in motorway tolls plus fuel, per this route guide. The catch is at the other end: you cannot drive into the villages.

Cinqueterre.com’s driving page is blunt about it: the historic centres are closed to private traffic, even for residents. Parking is limited to roadside spaces and a few paid car parks above each village, and in Vernazza part of the road is reserved for residents. Many visitors park in La Spezia and continue by train, which is only 12 km from Riomaggiore.

Is there a bus to Cinque Terre from Florence?

There is no regular public bus from Florence straight to the villages; the bus you will usually see advertised is an organised coach tour. Once you are in La Spezia, the park’s Explora 5 Terre buses run up to the villages and sanctuaries.

Coach tours solve the logistics, but you move on a fixed timetable with a large group, and most only stop in two or three villages.

Which is the best way to get to Cinque Terre from Florence?

For a budget and a flexible schedule, the train is the best way to get to Cinque Terre from Florence. If you are a family, a small group, or you want to combine the coast with Portovenere or Lucca on the same day, a private driver removes the La Spezia change and the parking problem.

Here is how the options compare:

OptionDoor-to-door time (one way)What to know
Train via La SpeziaAbout 2.5–3 hoursCheapest; one change; busy in summer
Driving yourselfAbout 3 hours, plus parkingTolls around €14; villages closed to cars
Coach tourFixed by the operatorLarge group, set stops
Private driverAbout 3 hours, hotel to villageDrop-off where cars are allowed, no parking search

With a driver, you still walk the last stretch into each village, because nobody can drive into the centres. What changes is that someone else handles the motorway, the car parks and the timing, and you can mix the coast with a stop in Portovenere.

Can you visit Cinque Terre from Florence in one day?

Yes, but plan for a long day and choose two or three villages rather than all five. The travel time alone is 5 to 6 hours return, so a relaxed pace beats trying to tick off every village.

Starting early helps with both the trains and the summer crowds. If you would rather arrive by sea, ferries run in spring and summer from La Spezia, Lerici and Portovenere.

How do we plan a private Cinque Terre day from Florence?

We collect you at your Florence hotel in a Mercedes, drive you to the coast and plan the day around the villages you want to see. Our private Cinque Terre and Portovenere tours include a yacht option for seeing the villages from the water.
