Livorno to Florence and Pisa: A Cruise Passenger’s Guide

Going from Livorno to Florence and Pisa in one port day is possible, but it takes planning. Florence is about 88 km from Livorno, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes by car, while Pisa is only 15 to 20 minutes away by train, so a common plan is Florence first and a quick stop in Pisa on the way back.

The thing that matters most on a cruise day is not getting there. It is getting back before the ship leaves.

How far is it from Livorno to Florence?

The Livorno to Florence distance is about 88 km (55 miles), roughly 1 hour 11 minutes by car, according to Rome2Rio. By train it takes between 1 hour 10 minutes and 1 hour 35 minutes from Livorno Centrale, per IQ Cruising’s port guide.

Pisa is only 15 to 20 minutes by train from Livorno, which is why the two cities pair so well on a port day.

How do you get from the port of Livorno to Florence?

From the cruise terminal, first get to Livorno Centrale station, about two miles east of the port, by city bus or taxi; then take a train to Florence, as IQ Cruising explains. The same guide lists around seven trains between 8 and 11 a.m.

It recommends waiting for a direct train rather than jumping on the first departure.

How much is a taxi from Livorno port?

IQ Cruising quotes about €25 for a taxi from the cruise terminal to Livorno Centrale for up to four people, and warns that some drivers try to inflate the fare. A taxi all the way from Livorno to Florence is a much bigger fare, so agree the price before you get in.

For a group, a pre-booked car is often simpler than negotiating at the rank, because the price and pickup point are fixed in advance.

How do you make sure you’re back before the ship sails?

Plan your return around the last train you can safely catch, not the last one on the timetable. IQ Cruising notes at least five trains from Florence to Livorno between 3 and 5:30 p.m., arriving between 4:15 and 6:45 p.m., and advises double-checking times at the station.

Remember you still need to get from Livorno Centrale back to the terminal. If the ship’s all-aboard time is early, a train delay leaves very little margin.

Can you see Florence and Pisa in one day from Livorno?

Yes, if you keep Pisa short. The usual plan is to spend most of the day in Florence and stop at the Leaning Tower on the way back, since Pisa lies between Florence and Livorno.

With a train, that means an extra stop; with a car, it is a short detour. If you go by train, Pisa San Rossore is about a 5-minute walk from the tower, though not every train stops there.

How do we run a private Livorno to Florence tour?

We collect you at the cruise port, drive you to Florence and back, with Pisa on the way if you want it, and plan the day around your ship’s all-aboard time. Our shore excursions are private, in a Mercedes for up to 3, a V-Class for up to 7 or a Sprinter for up to 8.

Send us your ship, date and port times through our booking form and we will reply with a plan and a quote.
